Why you'll love this recipe
- Ease: One of the best things about this recipe is how simple it is to make. All you need is a bowl and a whisk—no mixer required! This makes it the perfect option for beginner bakers or anyone looking to minimize kitchen clean-up. Plus, with just a few pantry staples, you can whip up a batch in no time and have your house smelling like holiday magic.
- Brown Butter Flavor: The browned butter is what takes these blondies to the next level. The butter is melted and cooked until it turns a golden brown color, creating a rich, nutty, almost caramel-like flavor that gives these blondies their signature taste.
- Fudgy Texture: These Christmas blondies are wonderfully thick and chewy, with a soft, dense crumb. Thanks to the extra egg yolk and the dark brown sugar, they have the perfect fudgy texture that will have everyone coming back for seconds (or thirds!).
- Loaded with Chocolate: Dark chocolate chips melt beautifully into the blondies, offering pockets of rich, bittersweet chocolate throughout each bite. The chocolate contrasts perfectly with the sweetness of the brown butter.
- Festive and Fun: These blondies are a visual treat as well as a delicious one. Topped with colorful Christmas sprinkles, they’re an easy way to get into the holiday spirit.
- Perfect for Any Occasion: These blondies are incredibly versatile. Not only are they great for Christmas, but they also work for any holiday gathering, from Thanksgiving to New Year's Eve. They’re even easy enough to make as a quick gift for friends or neighbors.
Equipment
Using a kitchen scale is one of the best ways to ensure your blondies turn out perfectly every time. When you measure by weight, you're getting the most accurate amounts for each ingredient, which can make a big difference in the final texture. For example, flour can easily be over-measured if you’re using cups, which can lead to dry, dense blondies. With a scale, you’re guaranteed precision, which means you’ll get that perfect chewy, fudgy texture every time.
Additionally, using a kitchen scale reduces cleanup—no more scooping flour into a measuring cup, leveling it off, and having to clean multiple measuring cups. Simply weigh your ingredients directly into your bowl, and you’re ready to go. It’s an easy hack that saves time and stress while making your baking process smoother overall.
Ingredients
Let's make this chewy blondies recipe!
- Butter (Browned): The key ingredient that gives these blondies their rich flavor.
- Kosher Salt: Salt brings out the sweet and balances flavors, it is a must!
- Dark Brown Sugar: For depth and moisture, dark brown sugar has more molasses making the blondies chewier and have more flavor.
- Extra Egg Yolk: Ensures a fudgy and dense texture.
- Dark Chocolate Chips: For the perfect chocolatey bite.
See recipe card below for quantities.
Substitutions
Variations for Christmas bars recipes.
- Add Toffee: For an extra layer of flavor and texture, stir in some toffee bits. The buttery, caramelized crunch from the toffee complements the rich brown butter in the blondies and adds a contrast to the smooth, melted chocolate. It’s the perfect way to elevate these blondies if you’re craving something a little more indulgent.
- Add Nuts: If you're a fan of nuts in your baked goods, try adding chopped pecans, walnuts, or even almonds to the batter. Not only do they bring in a satisfying crunch, but they also pair beautifully with the richness of the brown butter and the deep flavors of dark chocolate. Toasting the nuts beforehand enhances their flavor, giving them an irresistible toasted nuttiness.
- Add Festive Christmas M&Ms: To make these blondies even more festive, fold in some red and green M&Ms. Not only do they bring color and a playful vibe to the treat, but they also offer an extra burst of sweetness in each bite. The combination of chocolate chips and M&Ms makes these blondies even more chocolate-packed and deliciously fun.

Instructions
Let's make Christmas blondies!
Step 1. Brown the butter first. To brown butter, melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently. Once melted, it will foam and begin to turn golden, then brown. Keep stirring to prevent burning, and when it reaches a nutty aroma and deep brown color, remove it from the heat and let it cool.
Step 2. Whisk together the all purpose flour and salt, set aside.
Step 3. Place the dark brown sugar and granulated sugar in a bowl, add the cooled down brown butter. Mix until combined. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, mix until combined.
Step 4. Add the flour and salt, mix until just combined. Mix in the chocolate chips.
Step 5. Pour into the baking pan, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the Christmas sprinkles evenly over the top.
Step 6. Bake for 22-25 minutes, the top will look just set and the center will be slightly wobbly. Do not over bake, check at 22 minutes.
Sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Let cool before cutting.
Hint: Make sure to get the bits of brown butter off of the bottom of the pan, thats where all the flavor is!
Pro tips
- Cool Down Melted Browned Butter: Let the browned butter cool slightly before mixing it with other ingredients to avoid melting the chocolate chips.
- Don’t Over bake: Keep an eye on them as they bake. Blondies are supposed to be soft and fudgy, so take them out when a toothpick comes out with just a few crumbs or the top looks just set.
- Use Dark Chocolate: The bittersweet taste of dark chocolate perfectly complements the richness of brown butter and enhances the flavor of the Christmas blondies.
- Sprinkle the Sprinkles Evenly: Add your festive sprinkles on top of the dough for an even distribution.
- Finish with Flaky Sea Salt: A light sprinkle of flaky sea salt on top balances the sweetness and enhances the flavor.
- Use Dark Brown Sugar: Dark brown sugar deepens the flavor and gives the blondies a deliciously moist texture.
FAQ
What is the difference between a blondie and brownie?
Brownies are made with cocoa powder or melted chocolate, giving them a deep, chocolaty flavor and darker color. On the other hand, blondies use brown sugar and butter as their primary flavoring, which results in a sweeter, caramel-like taste and a golden-brown color. Essentially, blondies are a "vanilla" version of brownies, with a buttery, toffee-like richness.
Why are my blondies dry and hard?
Try not to over mix and do not over bake! Check at 22 minutes. The top will look set, the center will be wobbly. They will continue baking on the counter.
How do I brown butter?
To brown butter, melt unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently. Once melted, it will foam and begin to turn golden, then brown. Keep stirring to prevent burning, and when it reaches a nutty aroma and deep brown color, remove it from the heat and let it cool.
Are my blondies underbaked?
They might look underbaked but once they cool they will be the perfect fudgy and gooey consistency.
Storage
Refrigerator: It's best not to store blondies in the refrigerator, as it can dry them out and affect their texture.
Room Temperature: Store blondies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They’ll stay soft and fresh without losing their fudgy texture.
Freezer: For longer storage, freeze blondies in an airtight container or wrapped tightly in plastic wrap and a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Let them thaw at room temperature before enjoying.
