There’s nothing better than a Rice Krispie treat, except one loaded with Nutella and topped with a rich layer of chocolate. I’ve tested this recipe again and again to get that perfect chewy texture, Nutella flavor, and just the right amount of chew.

The secret is folding Nutella into the marshmallow base, which gives every bite a hazelnut chocolate flavor that pairs perfectly with the crispy cereal. Then, to take it over the top, I finish these bars with a smooth chocolate Nutella layer that sets into the dreamiest topping. As a pastry chef who’s obsessed with the little details, I promise this version is foolproof and completely addictive. It’s a simple, nostalgic treat made extra decadent with that Nutella chocolate finish, and trust me, you’ll be reaching for a second (or third) piece.

Ingredients You'll Need for Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
Ingredients needed for chocolate covered rice krispies recipe

- Marshmallows. You'll need mini marshmallows. The marshmallows are melted down with the Nutella to create that chewy base, while the mini marshmallows are folded in at the end for extra gooey pockets of goodness. Check out my smore blondies and mini smores pies!
- Nutella. This is a must-have ingredient! It gives these treats their rich, chocolatey flavor that pairs perfectly with the marshmallows.
- Rice Krispies. Feel free to use generic crispy rice cereal if you prefer. They provide the classic crunch that makes these treats so satisfying.
- Butter. A small amount of butter is essential when melting the marshmallows. It prevents them from burning and helps create a smooth, creamy mixture.

Recommended Equipment
An 8X8 baking pan is a must for these chocolate topped rice krispie treats, the recipe is perfectly thick and chewy when using this size pan. Lining it with parchment paper makes it way easier to clean and remove the treats from the pan!

How to make rice krispie treats:

Step 1. Line an 8X8 pan with parchment paper. Melt down the butter. Pour in the 10 oz of mini marshmallows, stir until melted.

Step 2. Take the melted marshmallows off of the heat, add the Nutella. Stir until melted.

Step 3. Stir in the Rice Krispies.

Step 4. Stir in the mini marshmallows, stir until completely combined.

Step 5. Pour into the pan, spread it out evenly by pushing down slightly.

Step 6. Pour the dark chocolate over the top of the treats, spreading it out evenly.
Drizzle the Nutella over the top, swirling both together with a knife. Place in the refrigerator until set. Take out once set and sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
Hint: I like to remove the marshmallows from the heat before adding the Nutella to prevent the mixture from burning. Using parchment paper to push the gooey rice krispies makes it easy to spread out.

Substitutions for Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies
- Peanut butter would be amazing instead of Nutella. Peanut butter chocolate never gets old!
- White chocolate with the Nutella swirled on top would be delish if you're a white chocolate fan! Check out my strawberry white chocolate muffins too!

Pro tips
- Always use fresh marshmallows for the best results when making chocolate covered rice krispies with marshmallows. Stale marshmallows can be dry and difficult to melt properly, leading to a less chewy and enjoyable texture. Fresh marshmallows will ensure your treats are soft and gooey.
- Melt the marshmallows and butter over low heat to prevent burning and ensure a smooth mixture. Stir constantly to avoid any sticking or scorching. Patience is key here, as melting them slowly helps maintain the perfect consistency for mixing in the Nutella and Rice Krispies.
- When spreading the mixture into the pan, use a light touch. Pressing too hard can compact the Rice Krispies and make the treats dense. For best results, lightly press the mixture into the pan using a buttered spatula or a piece of wax paper. This will help keep the treats airy and crispy.
Serving Suggestions for Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
These Rice Krispie treats are best served cut into squares once the topping has fully set. For an extra touch, sprinkle a bit of flaky sea salt or crushed hazelnuts on top before the chocolate firms up, it adds both flavor and texture.
Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies FAQs
Why are my rice krispie treats hard?
It's likely due to overcooking the marshmallows and butter mixture or pressing the mixture too firmly into the pan. When melting the marshmallows and butter, use low heat and stir constantly to achieve a smooth, even texture without burning.
How can I make these chocolate covered rice krispies gluten free?
You can make these with gluten free cereal and make sure the other ingredients do not have any gluten.
Why isn't my chocolate topping setting?
The chocolate Nutella topping needs to be placed in the refrigerator to set and then taken out once set.
Can I use regular sized marshmallows?
Yes you can for melting, but I like the minis for folding in at the end for extra gooey texture!

How to Store Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats
Store the chocolate rice treats in a container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Consume the treats within 3-5 days for best freshness and texture, ensuring they stay soft and chewy. If you live in a humid climate, consider placing a small piece of bread in the container to absorb excess moisture and maintain freshness.
